Activity Overview

Students investigate a pattern using the constant function on the calculator, record the results displayed on the calculator, and describe how the constant key works.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print student activity sheet pg 54 from the attached PDF file for your class


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Choose a constant function and a starting number
  • Predict the value of the starting number that will be obtained when the constant function is applied once
  • Predict the next several numbers in the pattern and then verify the predictions with the calculator
  • Choose a different constant function and starting number and repeat the activity
  • Understand how the constant function works
  • Describe a real-life situation in which the constant function might be helpful


    After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
