Students use the calculator to represent decimals and to recognize patterns in the number symbols.

Before the Activity

  • During the Activity

    Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Calculate the number of squares in a 10 X 10 grid and find the worth of one square if the grid is worth one dollar
  • Understand the concept of 1/100 th of a dollar and relate it to one cent
  • Write 1/100 th as a faction and as a decimal
  • Use the calculator to count by hundredths in decimal form and label the squares on the grid
  • Use the calculator to count by hundredths in fraction form and label the squares on the grid
  • Compare the patterns in the two labeled grids
  • Observe any relation between the fraction and decimal representations


    After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
