Making Picture Graphs
 


Activity Overview

Students learn to make picture graphs with symbols that represent more than one piece of data.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 55 - 58 from the attached PDF file for your class


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Design question cards for collecting data
  • Work in groups of four, each group collects 80 pieces of data
  • Discuss putting the data in groups of 5, 8, 10, and 20 and the effect on the look of the graph
  • Represent the data with the help of manipulatives such as colored chips
  • Use the calculator to group data and make picture graphs with symbols that represent more than one piece of data


    After the Activity

    Students record the data on the Recording Sheets.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
