Symmetry with Pattern Blocks
 


Activity Overview

Students learn to use pattern blocks to build a design that has a line of symmetry. They use the calculator to determine the value of half the design. They predict and then find the value of the entire design.

Before the Activity

  • Print pages 45 - 48 from the attached PDF file for your class

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Use pattern blocks to build a design that has a line of symmetry
  • Predict the value of half the design, if the value of a green triangle is 1 cent
  • Predict the value of the entire design, find the values and compare with the predicted values
  • Repeat the activity with other values of the green triangle and two lines of symmetry

    		After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
