Activity Overview

Students learn to use manipulatives and calculators to explore what happens when they change one number at a time in an addition number sentence. They record and develop the pattern that develops.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 23 - 26 from the attached PDF file for your class

    		•

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Read the story that uses addition and write number sentences for the story
  • Model the story with manipulatives
  • Choose one number in the story to change
  • Change the number and model the new number sentence with manipulatives and discuss how the story should change to work with the new sentence
  • Continue to change the same number
  • Record and describe the pattern that develops
  • Select other stories and number sentences and repeat the sequence

    		After the Activity

    		Students complete the Recording Sheet.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
