Activity Overview

Students learn to add and subtract numbers using the calculator. They investigate patterns in place value and explore relationships between numbers on the hundred chart.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 17 - 20 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Select a number from the hundred chart and note the number to the right of it
  • Observe that the number to the right is one more than the original number
  • Investigate numbers to the left, above, and below the original number and investigate the relationship
  • Select two numbers on the hundred chart and draw a path between the numbers, moving horizontally and vertically from square to square
  • Use the calculator, start with one number, and use number operations to trace the action steps to reach the second number
  • Repeat the activity using different paths
  • Observe which steps lead to the left, to the right, and what happens when the path moves up and down
  • Understand the pattern in the place values and the effect of adding and subtracting using the calculator

    After the Activity

    Students complete the Recording Sheet.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
