Activity Overview

Students learn to add using place-value material and a calculator. They make connections between base-ten numerals and the quantities they represent.

Before the Activity

  • During the Activity

    Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Use place-value material or make blocks of ones, tens, and hundreds out of grid paper to understand a tens block is made of ten ones
  • Prepare the calculator to count by tens
  • Learn to add in multiples of tens
  • Use the blocks to count and the calculator to record the counting
  • Prepare the calculator to count by ones
  • Learn to add ones to the earlier total
  • Use the blocks to count and the calculator to record the counting
  • Observe the connection between the tens and ones and the number on the calculator
  • Count several different groups of place-value materials


    After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
