Patterns in Counting
 


Activity Overview

Students learn to count in multiples of numbers using concrete objects and a calculator. They also connect number symbols to quantities, and look for patterns in the number symbols.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 7 - 9 from the attached PDF file for your class


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Hold ten beans in one hand
  • Estimate the number of beans that can be held in one hand
  • Pick up a handful of beans and count them with the help of a hundred grid and the calculator
  • Observe connection between number symbols and quantities; look for patterns in the number symbols
  • Note when the numbers start using two spaces on the calculator
  • Determine who grabbed the greatest number of beans and who got the smallest number of beans
  • Repeat the activity and calculate the number of beans held in two hands; determine how to use the calculator to count two beans at one time


    After the Activity

    Students collect data and answer questions on the Recording Sheet.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
