Activity Overview

Students learn to calculate volume of a sphere and a rectangular prism. They explore methods of determining how many volleyballs can be placed in a room.

Before the Activity

  • Review the formulas for computing attributes of circles, spheres, and rectangular prisms
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 109 - 110 from the attached Student PDF file for the class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Measure the length, width, and height of the room
  • Compute the volume of the room
  • Use the formula to calculate the volume of the volleyball
  • Divide the volume of the room by the volume of the ball
  • Determine the number of volleyballs the room can accommodate
  • Find the total cost incurred in filling the room with balls, given the price of one ball
  • Discuss other methods that can be used to solve the problem and which method will give an under-estimate and which method will give an over-estimate

    After the Activity

Students complete the Student Activity pages.
  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
