Activity Overview

Students use the Pythagorean theorem to compute the diagonals of rectangles.

Before the Activity

  • Review the concepts of square and square root
  • Use the attached transparency sheet to review the Pythagorean theorem
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 97 - 99 from the attached Student PDF file for the class


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.
    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Examine the length and width of the precut TV openings
  • Use the Pythagorean theorem to compute the length of the diagonal of each rectangular opening
  • Match the diagonals of the TV with the measure of the diagonals of the openings
  • Decide which television fits in which precut TV opening


    After the Activity

    Students complete the Student Activity pages.
  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
