Activity Overview

Students calculate the probable number of Golden-Cheeked Warblers present in a particular area. Students prepare a marked map, calculate the number of square miles in the marked area, and estimate the number of birds that live in the area.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 56 - 62 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • Review the four steps of problem solving with the students


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Read the problem and understand the facts about endangered birds
  • Discuss how much area a pair of Golden-Cheeked Warblers need
  • Use the map to mark out the area where the endangered birds live
  • Create a map legend and calculate the area of the marked region
  • Estimate the number of bird pairs that may live in the area
  • Write a paragraph on steps and calculations used to solve the problem


  • Solving problems involving area
  • Use the calculator to solve problems involving area calculation


    After the Activity

    Students compare the maps and discuss the results found.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
