Activity Overview

Students learn to solve a real-world environmental problem. They learn how to use the parameters of the final product to work out a reforestation plan.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 50 - 55 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • Review the four steps of problem solving with the students

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Read the Reforestation Problem
  • Study the facts about reforestation
  • Make a plan that will make sure there are 435 trees on one acre after five years
  • Use the facts to determine how many seedlings need to be planted
  • Calculate the total cost of the reforestation
  • Create a visual display and show all the information about the reforestation plan
  • Write an explanation of the solution shown


    • Multiplying decimals
  • Use the calculator to solve problems that involve multiplication of decimals

    		After the Activity

    		Students evaluate each presentation.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
