Activity Overview

Students learn to solve a real-world problem comparing overdue fines at different libraries.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 36 - 42 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • Review the four steps of problem solving with the students


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Read the book and paraphrase the problem
  • Understand the facts about overdue fines at different libraries
  • Make a plan to find the number of days the book was overdue
  • Create a graph showing the amount of the overdue fine at each of the libraries
  • Write an explanation of the team's solution


  • Basic operations
  • Use the calculator to solve problems based on simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division


    After the Activity

    Students examine the various solutions presented.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
