Activity Overview

Students learn to determine the possible combinations of score events to reach a specific score in a football game.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 30 - 35 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • Review the four steps of problem solving with the students


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Understand how points are scored in a football game
  • Read the problem statement
  • Create a plan to show different ways a team can score 77 points
  • Find the combinations of point values that can be used to reach 77 points
  • Compare the numbers used and discuss the reasonableness of the results
  • Create a poster showing the different ways the football team scores points


  • Using parentheses
  • Use parentheses to keep the all the calculations in order and solve the problem using the calculator


    After the Activity

    Students examine the various solutions presented.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
