Dividing Notes

Activity Overview

Students create an altered musical melody by dividing fractions. They compute the value of notes in terms of fractions and make their sum equal to the time signature.

Before the Activity

  • Understand the basic fundamentals of musical notes, time signature and bar measures
  • Record the Time Signature fraction of a musical melody
  • Using fractional value for each note, add up all the notes
  • Divide the total by the time signature to get the number of measures
  • Find the relationship between time signature and the total note values
  • Count and record the number of vertical bar lines
  • Determine the number of measures and the fractional value of each measure
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 58 - 65 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:

  • Understand that time signature fraction indicates the total value of notes in each measure
  • Realize that complete measures have exactly the same fractional value as the time signature
  • Fill in the note heads of the notes that should be filled in
  • Add stems to notes that need them
  • Divide the notes into measures using proper bar lines
  • Use only one whole note in the melody
  • Create a chart which includes the fractional value of each note
  • Add stems to the note and bar lines such that every measure is a complete measure and the fractional values in each measure add up to the value of the time signature

    After the Activity

Students complete Oscar Semiquavers incomplete melody and play it.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
