Activity Overview

Students will reduce a cafeteria recipe to suit a household recipe. They use compatible numbers to choose smaller measurements while retaining the original proportions.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 45 - 51 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Find ways to divide 35 chocolates to make 14 equal portions
  • Solve the problem by dividing with a whole number and by multiplying with a fraction
  • Compare the two methods and observe that either method can be used to solve the problem
  • Understand that division by a number is equivalent to multiplying by its reciprocal

  • Decide on the number of cookies to be made, and determine the fractional part of the actual recipe
  • Multiply this fraction with the measures of ingredients in the actual recipe
  • Check if the fractions are close to the standard measuring kitchen tools
  • Calculate the cost of the ingredients, and the cost of the cookies
  • Determine the price for a cookie

    After the Activity

Students determine the profit for the cookies sold at the Bake Sale.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss the various approaches used, and the similarities and differences between the group solutions
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
