Creating Word Problems
 


Activity Overview

Students write word problems based on the whole numbers generated by the calculator. They decide on an operation to solve the problems. They analyze the problems to determine the problem characteristics when using operations on whole numbers.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 1 - 9 from the attached PDF file for your class
  • Set up the calculator as explained in the activity

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Read the book and describe the types of problems faced by the main character
  • Write the number 16 and determine the problems that have 16 as an answer
  • Select one problem and make a word problem


  • Use the calculator to generate numbers for some equations with missing operations
  • Use the calculator and try out each operation with the numbers
  • Decide which operation gives the answer displayed on the calculator
  • Write a word problem that matches each equation for the operation which has been selected

    		After the Activity

    		Students analyze how the operation helped with creating word problems.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
