Activity Overview

Students learn to build and add two digit numbers. They connect number words and numerals.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 33 - 44 from the attached PDF file for your class

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the page to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
    Activity A:
  • Show and read the Cheerios Counting Book to students


    • Activity B:
  • Pass out 100 Cheerios, cups, and place value mats
  • Call out a number
  • Students make the number and write the number on the mat
  • Using tens and ones, show how to add 2 digit numbers on the mat


    • Activity C:
  • Use the calculator to add 2-digit numbers
  • Identify the place value of the digits


    • Activity D:
  • Ask students to add some two-digit numbers with the help of Cheerios and re-grouping


    • Activity E:
  • Build and add 2-digit numbers with the help of the calculator
  • Write the numbers in place value language

    		After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary

    The following materials are required for this activity:

  • Book: The Cheerios Counting Book
  • Cheerios®
  • 2-ounce condiment cups
  • Wooden tongue depressors
  • Glue
  • Place value mats (made from 12"x 18" construction paper)
