Activity Overview

Students use the calculator to compute products of numbers and to find answers to division problems. The activity is designed to help students develop number sense with the operations of multiplication and division.

During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

Follow the Activity procedures:

Form two teams

Select two numbers with a small difference as the target range

Team B selects a two digit number as the start number

Record these numbers on the Estimation Game Recording Sheet

Team A uses mental arithmetic and estimation skills to choose a number which when multiplied by the start number provides a product that lies within the target range

If the answer does not lie in the target range, Team B thinks of another number which when multiplied by the product gives a value that lies in the target range

Continue the game until one of the teams gets an expression whose answer lies in the target range

Play several rounds of the multiplication game

Repeat the above activity using the division operation

After the Activity

Students complete the record sheet and answer questions.

Review student results:

As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging

Re-teach concepts as necessary
