Activity Overview

Students learn to quickly add lists of numbers by adding like terms and using the distributive property.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 69 - 72 from the attached PDF file for your class


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Choose two numbers, a and b as the first two terms in a sequence of ten numbers
  • Generate the next eight terms in the sequence where each number is equal to the sum of the two preceding numbers
  • Use the distributive property to find the number of a's and b's in the sequence
  • Observe that there are 55 a's and 88 b's in the sequence
  • Notice that 55a + 88b gives the sum of the sequence
  • Observe that (11 * the seventh term of the sequence) also results in the sum of the sequence


    After the Activity

    Students will complete the Worksheet and analyze the results.

    Review student results:
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
