Activity Overview

In this activity, students work in groups to collect data and draw conclusions from random samples simulated by drawing tiles from a bag. They represent the data collected in the form of a triple bar graph.

Before the Activity

  • Prepare five bags labeled A, B, C, D, and E for each group and insert tiles according to the given table
  • Understand that two bags belong to twins and contain the same candy
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 61 - 68 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Draw a tile from a bag and record the color
  • Replace the tile, shake the bag, and draw another tile
  • Record the number of each color tile drawn and the total number of trials
  • Find the probability ratio as a fraction, in decimal form, and as a percent
  • Create lists of the probability ratio for each color for all the bags
  • Create a triple bar graph with data for each bag, with the bars representing the colors
  • Determine which two graphs look most similar and decide which two bags belong to the twins
  • Compare actual data with experimental results

    After the Activity

Students complete the Student Activity sheet.

    Review student results:
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
