Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

Real Numbers

Activity Overview

Students learn to identify real numbers as rational numbers and irrational numbers. They review rational numbers as repeating decimals, and irrational numbers as non-repeating decimals. They also review commutative, associative, distributive, as well as inverse properties of real numbers systems. Students learn the Pythagorean theorem, and the formula for finding the circumference of a circle.

Before the Activity

Install Topics in Algebra 1 (Chapters 1-4) App on the calculator using one of these two methods:
  • TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™  "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 1-23 to 1-29 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Write three different irrational numbers
  • Use the real number properties to solve multiplication problems
  • Determine if a given number is a rational or an irrational number
  • Decide which single property (commutative, associative and distributive) is represented in an equation
  • Use the Pythagorean theorem to draw a triangle whose two legs are 1 unit each, and hypotenuse is √2 units
  • Use the formula for the area of a circle and the area of a square to solve the problem

    After the Activity

Students will complete the Student Worksheet and analyze the results.

    Review student results:
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
