Activity Overview

In this activity, students will use the Probability Simulation application to roll a fair die and explore the Law of Large Numbers. They will conduct probability experiments that involve tossing a fair die, graph the results, compare the experimental probability to its theoretical probability and see how the Law of Large Numbers affects the results.

Before the Activity

Install the Probability Simulation Application on the calculator using one of these two methods:
  • TI Connect™, a TI Connectivity Cable, and the Unit-to-Unit Link Cable
  • TI-Navigator™  "send to class" feature
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 1-12 from the attached PDF file for your class

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Practice rolling a dice on the Probability Simulation Application and view the graph
  • Create a Qualitative Scale of Evenness (QSE)
  • Simulate the rolling of die 1020 times and record the results
  • Collect the data generated by all students
  • Graph the results of the entire class
  • Understand that as more trials run, the experimental probability comes closer to the theoretical probability

    		After the Activity

    		Students will complete the Student Worksheet and answer questions.

    Review student results:
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
