Finding the Maximum Product
 


Activity Overview

In this activity, students use the CellSheet™ Application to organize data. They solve a problem of finding two positive integers equal to or greater than zero with a given sum and the maximum product.

Before the Activity

  • Set up the CellSheet™ on the calculator using the TI Connect™
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 22 - 30 from the attached PDF file for your class

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Open the CellSheet Application on the calculator and start a new spreadsheet
  • Enter the values of the first integer starting from zero
  • Enter the values of the second integer so that the sum of the 2 integers is the sum specified
  • For each set of integers find the product
  • Observe the trend in the product data generated
  • Graph the positive integer value and the product data
  • Determine the 2 positive integers whose sum is the value specified and has the maximum product

    		After the Activity

    		Students will complete the worksheet and answer questions.

    Review student results:
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
