Activity Overview

In this activity, students will collect data by measuring different linear objects and develop a strategy to determine the conversion factors required to convert from one linear measurement to another.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 105 - 113 from the attached PDF file for your class

    		•

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Measure and record the lengths and widths of a desk, chalkboard and textbook in feet and inches, meters and centimeters
  • Determine the conversion factor for the English system (inches and feet)
  • Determine the linear conversion factors in the metric system
  • Use the factors to convert from one unit to the other

    		After the Activity

    		Students will complete the Data Collection and Analysis Sheet and answer questions listed in it.

    Review student results:
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
