Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

A Tale of Two Temperatures

Activity Overview

In this activity, students will collect data for a range of temperatures in units of Fahrenheit and Celsius, and develop a conversion formula for changing from one unit to the other.

Before the Activity

  • Install the CBL/CBR Application on the students' graphing calculators using TI Connect™ or TI-GRAPH LINK™, TI Connectivity cable and the unit-to-unit link cable
  • Connect the TI-73 to the CBL 2™ unit
  • Connect the two temperature probes to the CBL, one to Channel 1, and the second to Channel 2
  • Tape the two probes together so that the black tips are side by side
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 15 - 33 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Prepare two containers of water, one hot and the other cold
  • Place the probes in cold water
  • Using temperature probes, measure temperature in both units of Fahrenheit and Celsius
  • Quickly move the probes to the container with hot water and continue measuring temperature
  • Plot Fahrenheit versus Celsius data
  • Create a model for the relationship between the units of Fahrenheit and Celsius
  • Examine the slope and y-intercept of your model
  • Analyze the accuracy of the measures made by the probes with the CBL device as compared to the True conversion formula values

    After the Activity

Students will fill in the Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results:
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
