Velocity Test: Interpreting Velocity Graphs

Activity Overview

In this activity, students' will use a motion detector to record the distance versus time data for the simple motion of a walker. They will calculate velocity from this graph and compare it with the velocity graph generated by the calculator.

Before the Activity

  • Connect motion detector to the DIG/SONIC port of the CBL 2™ or the DIG/SONIC 1 port of the Vernier LabPro®
  • Connect the CBL 2 or LabPro to the calculator using the Unit-to-Unit cable
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 123 - 128 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Place the motion detector on the table pointing to an open area
  • Stand still for a second, walk away from the motion detector at a steady pace for two seconds, and then walk toward it for two seconds
  • Record the time and distance values and plot a distance versus time graph
  • Find the slopes for the three segments and sketch a velocity versus time graph

    After the Activity

Students' will fill in the Data Collection and Analysis Sheet and answer questions listed in it.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
