Walk This Way: Definition of Rate
 


Activity Overview

In this activity, students' will use a motion detector to record distance and velocity versus time information for a walker. They find the area under the velocity versus time graph and compare it to the actual distance traveled by the walker.

Before the Activity

  • Connect motion detector to the DIG/SONIC port of the CBL 2™ or the DIG/SONIC 1 port of the Vernier LabPro®
  • Connect the CBL 2 or LabPro to the calculator using the Unit-to-Unit cable
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 115 - 120 from the attached PDF file for your class


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Place the motion detector on the table pointing to an open area
  • Walk away from the motion detector at a steady pace for a few seconds and then stand still
  • Record the time and distance values and plot a velocity versus time graph
  • Trace the graph, find the representative velocity value and the average velocity
  • Calculate the distance walked


    After the Activity

    Students' will complete the Data Collection and Analysis Sheet and answer the questions listed in it.

    Review student results:
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
