Activity Overview

In this activity, students observe and graph data about human fetal growth rates. Students build a regression model based on the data and compare values with those of other mammals. They also compare the data to non-mammal species.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 119 - 125 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activities procedures:
  • Enter weeks of fetal development and fetal mass data in a list
  • Fit data in a regression model that best suits the data
  • Estimate values of newborn's mass for other mammals
  • Compare altricial and precocial birds

    After the Activity

Students will complete Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
