Activity Overview

Students use a motion detector to the measure the reaction time of other students. They graph the data from trials conducted in the class and analyze trends. They then calculate drop distance from reaction time.

Before the Activity

  • Link the CBR™ and the calculator using the unit-to-unit link cable
  • Use TI Connect™ to analyze data on the computer
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 107 - 115 from the attached PDF file for your class

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Attach a paper plate or note card to a meter stick
  • Place the CBR™ on the floor and position the meter stick directly over the sensor
  • Conduct trials of reflexes in pairs, where a student holding the stick drops it and another student tries to catch it as quickly as possible
  • Collect data of 10 trials for each student and calculate average for each student
  • Graph class average values and make a box plot with five point summary
  • Calculate the the distance the meter stick fell

    		After the Activity

    		Students will complete Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
