Activity Overview

In this activity, students simulate the spread of a virus. They produce a graph representing the spread and analyze the rates of change over time. Students compare how viral and bacterial infections spread in a population.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 81 - 86 from the attached PDF file for your class

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Assign integers to each student in class
  • Randomly generate integers to indicate individuals infected with the virus
  • Record the total number of students infected after each trial
  • Graph the data
  • Analyze the graphical data representing the spread
  • Determine the rate of change of those infected between consequetive trials
  • Use the information to describe the spread of viral disease

    		After the Activity

    		Students will complete Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
