Is There a Limit?

Activity Overview

In this activity, students examine data about bacteria and their growth. They produce a scatter plot, a best-fit model, and draw conclusions based on the data and graph.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 71 - 77 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Enter the population growth data for bacteria that is actively reproducing
  • Identify the independent and dependent variables and graph the data
  • Build a regression model for the data in the graph
  • Extrapolate the graph and estimate the number of bacteria that will be there after different growth periods
  • Understand how limiting factors determine population size and carrying capacity

    After the Activity

Students will complete Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
