In this activity, students examine data about bacteria and their growth. They produce a scatter plot, a best-fit model, and draw conclusions based on the data and graph.

During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

Follow the Activity procedures:

Enter the population growth data for bacteria that is actively reproducing

Identify the independent and dependent variables and graph the data

Build a regression model for the data in the graph

Extrapolate the graph and estimate the number of bacteria that will be there after different growth periods

Understand how limiting factors determine population size and carrying capacity

After the Activity

Students will complete Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

Review student results

As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging

Re-teach concepts as necessary
