Activity Overview

In this activity, students will examine the historical natural selection model of peppered moths. Students will use the calculator to enhance their understanding of the model by analyzing patterns in long-term data of light colored and dark colored moth populations.

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Enter the number of moths of each color by decade in a list
  • Graph the data
  • Calculate the change in the number of dark-colored and light-colored moths for different decades
  • Recognize patterns in the data
  • Understand the effect of the environment on natural selection

    		After the Activity

    		Students will fill in the Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
