Activity Overview

In this activity, students will collect data on all members of the class. They will make a graph of the data collected, interpret variations, and then draw conclusions.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 53 - 58 from the attached PDF file for your class

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedure:
  • Measure heights of students, hand span, forearm length, or any other feature identified by the instructor
  • Enter all the values
  • Calculate mean and median values
  • Arrange the data in order
  • Represent the data as a box-and-whisker plot
  • Record MinX, Q1, Median, Q3, and MaxX values
  • Examine the variation shown in the class
  • Understand the importance of variation to a population

    		After the Activity

    		Students will complete Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
