The Garbage Problem
 


Activity Overview

Students examine data about garbage production and graphically represent data in a scatter plot. From the data students make predictions. They develop an understanding of the environmental impact of trash accumulation and the need for a plan to deal with potential garbage problems.

  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Enter values of garbage produced each year from 1955 to 1995 and the population size for these years in a list
  • Graph amount of garbage produced versus the year and amount of garbage produced versus population size
  • Compare the rate of garbage production and extrapolate to predict trends
  • Understand the concept of dependent and independent variables
  • Analyze the environmental impact of garbage generation and possible methods of addressing the problem


    After the Activity

    Students will complete Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
