Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

Shape Up!

Activity Overview

In this activity, students will use the motion detector to record motion, and observe how the direction of movement, speed of travel, and the rate of change of direction and speed affect the shape of a Distance-Time plot.

Before the Activity

  • Connect the CBR™ to the calculator using the link cable
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 19 - 22 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Hold the CBR steady, or clamp it to a table
  • Ensure no obstructions are present between the moving object and the CBR
  • Observe the various shapes of the distance versus time graphs formed as result of motion in front of the CBR™
  • Determine which movements in front of the CBR™ create specific shapes in the distance versus time graph
  • Note which shapes can and cannot be made with the graph

    After the Activity

Students will collect data and analyze the results.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
