Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

Slow Down - Speed Up

Activity Overview

In this activity, students' will use a motion detector to observe the effect of speeding up, slowing down, and moving at a constant rate on a Distance versus Time plot.

Before the Activity

  • Connect the CBR™ to the calculator using the link cable
  • Run the Ranger program on the calculator
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 13 - 17 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Stand 0.5 meter in front of the CBR™
  • Walk away from the CBR at a steady medium pace for 5 seconds, slow down gradually for the next 5 seconds and come to a stop
  • Plot the distance versus time graph
  • In the second trial, stand motionless for 4 seconds, walk slowly away increasing speed for 10 seconds
  • Observe the distance versus time graph for each trial

    After the Activity

Students' will collect data and analyze the results.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
