Activity Overview

In this activity, students' will use a motion detector to determine what effect the speed at which a person moves has on the appearance of the Distance versus Time plot.

Before the Activity

  • Connect the CBR™ to the calculator using the link cable
  • Run the Ranger program on the calculator
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 9 - 12 from the attached PDF file for your class


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Stand 0.5 meter in front of the CBR
  • Walk away, slowly and steadily
  • Examine the distance versus time graph
  • Walk away at a medium pace
  • Examine the distance versus time graphs and understand how the graph changes as the speed of walking changes


    After the Activity

    Students' will collect data and analyze the results.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
