Activity Overview

In this activity, students move in a specific way in front of the motion detector to create motion plots that match a given Distance versus Time plot. They make connections between types of movements and characteristics of Distance-Time graphs. They learn to change the shape of the plot by adjusting the starting point, speed, and the direction of motion.

Before the Activity

  • Connect the CBR™ to the calculator using the link cable
  • Run the Ranger program on the calculator
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 5 - 8 from the attached PDF file for your class


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Measure 1-m intervals from a wall, marking each interval on the floor with masking tape for a total distance of 4 m
  • Analyse how you need to move in order to match the pre-generated DIST MATCH graph
  • Start moving and examine the distance versus time graph on the calculator
  • Compare this graph with the pre-generated graph


    After the Activity

    Students' will collect data and analyze the results.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
