Activity Overview

Students' use a motion detector to examine how different types of motion affect the shape of the Distance versus Time plot. They explore how changes in direction and other factors affect the shape of the plot.

Before the Activity

  • Connect the CBR™ to the calculator using the link cable
  • Run the Ranger program on the calculator
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 1 - 4 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Stand 0.5 meters in front of the CBR and walk away from the unit
  • Stand 5 m in front of the CBR and walk slowly toward the unit
  • Stand still in front of the unit
  • Observe the distance versus time graph for each trial
  • Understand how the direction of motion affects the graph

    After the Activity

Students' will collect data and analyze the results.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
