Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

The Effect of Temperature on the Rate of Dissolving

Activity Overview

In this activity, students' will use a Temperature Sensor to collect data and then analyze that data to determine the effect of temperature increases on the rate of dissolving. They will identify temperature as a factor in dissolving rate of reaction.

Before the Activity

  • Connect the Temperature Sensor in channel 1 of the CBL 2
  • Download DataMate™ program
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 49 - 53 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.
  • Complete the Hypothesis section on the Data Collection and Analysis page and predict the effect of water temperature on the dissolving time of a sugar cube

  • Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Place the temperature sensor in the first beaker with water and verify that the temperature is at 25' C
  • Add one sugar cube and start timing
  • Stir constantly
  • When the sugar cube dissolves stop the timer
  • Calculate the time taken to dissolve
  • Repeat the activity with water at 5' C and 35' C
  • Record the time and temperature data
  • Graph the data using the linear regression function

    After the Activity

Students' will complete Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
