Activity Overview

Students will examine surface area and volume of cells and describe the relationship between surface area and volume of cells.

Before the Activity

Students should have either a TI-83 or TI-84 Plus along with SciTool application. The attached .pdf form should be printed, copied and distributed to students.

During the Activity

Perform the procedures outlined in the printed .pdf form including the creation of list L1, L2 and L3. Students will learn through data analysis why living things are made of many small cells rather than a few large cells.

After the Activity

  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
