Activity Overview

Students will develop and test rules for rounding whole numbers and decimal fractions. They will use the information to solve real-world problems.

Before the Activity

  • Round off numbers using the calculator, make conjectures about the results, and verify them
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 10 - 17 from the attached PDF file for your class


  • During the Activity

    Distribute the pages to the class.

    Follow the activity procedures:
  • Enter a three digit number in the calculator, round off to the tens place, then to the hundreds place
  • Record results in the table
  • Repeat with more numbers and with four digit numbers
  • Choose numbers with three decimal places and round off to the tenth place and then to the hundredth place
  • Record the results


  • Each player earns 4/10th of a cent for each point in a bridge game session
  • Calculate the number of points and the amount of money earned by each player
  • Enter the points into the calculator and round them to the nearest cent and to the nearest dollar
  • Make a table showing all the calculations
  • Determine to which place they should round when calculating the amounts each player earns


    After the Activity

    Students analyze the results.

  • Review student results
  • As a class, evaluate different ways of solving the problem
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
