Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

Vernier - Microscale Acid-Base Titration

Activity Overview

In this activity, students' will use a pH sensor to determine the change in pH during a titration of a known concentration of NaOH and unknown concentration of HCl. Students' will determine the concentration of unknown HCl.

Before the Activity

Print the attached .pdf file for each student. You will find one file for DataMate and one file for EasyData.

During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Prepare and calibrate the pH sensor
  • Use a micro-beaker, add HCl of unknown concentration, indicator, and distilled water to it
  • Titrate 0.1M NaOH drop wise and determine volume of NaOH to reach Equivalence point, the point where there is a sharp rise in pH
  • Plot a graph of pH versus volume
  • Use the formula and calculate the concentration of HCl solution

    After the Activity

Students' will complete Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
