Activity Overview

In this activity, students compare human body mass with blood volume. They graph the data and build a regression model. They estimate their own blood volume and also predict volumes of blood for other animals.

Before the Activity

  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 97- to -103 from the attached PDF file for your class

  • During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Enter values of body mass and blood volume in a list
  • Graph the data
  • Build a best-fit model for the data in the graph
  • Understand the relationship between body mass and blood volume
  • Make estimates of blood volume and body mass for different situations
  • Predict the amounts of various blood components

    After the Activity

Students will complete Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
