Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

Vernier - Bungee Jump Accelerations

Activity Overview

Students use an Accelerometer to analyze the motion of a bungee jumper and determine a point where there is maximum and minimum acceleration in the course of the motion. They also compare the experimental data with an actual bungee jump.

Before the Activity

Print attached .pdf for each student. You will find one .pdf file for DataMate and one .pdf file for EasyData.

During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Attach a wooden block to the accelerometer and set the arrow of the accelerometer pointing upward
  • Tie one end of the rubber band to the wooden block and the other to a ring stand
  • Hold the wooden block, release it, start collecting data, and trace the graph displayed on the calculator
  • Collect data corresponding to bounces after the free-fall and determine a point where acceleration is positive and maximum
  • Drop the wooden block from the height of the ring stand, record data, and examine the graph of acceleration versus time displayed on the calculator

    After the Activity

Students will complete the Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
