Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

Vernier - Evaporation and Intermolecular Attractions

Activity Overview

Students will study temperature changes caused by the evaporation of alkenes and alcohols and relate this data to the strength of intermolecular forces of attraction. They will also predict, and then measure, the temperature change for other liquids.

Before the Activity

Print the attached .pdf for each student. You will find one .pdf for EasyData and one .pdf for DataMate.

During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Wrap probes with filter paper evenly and secure with rubber band
  • Dip probes in liquid and take initial temperature.
  • Remove probe and place it on a desk and measure change in temperature as liquid evaporates
  • From graph of temperature versus time find maximum and minimum temperatures and then calculate change in temperature during evaporation
  • Fill data sheet given to you with appropriate readings and calculations

    After the Activity

Students will complete Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

  • Students will compare data with molecular weights and hydrogen bonding capacity of each liquid tested, and interpret results.
  • Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
