Activity Detail

If you are using a TI-73, TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89, there may be particular math or science applications you will need to download to use certain activities. If you are using TI-Nspire technology, please update your TI-Nspire handheld operating system or computer software to view the latest activities. The latest TI-Nspire operating system was released in June 2009.

Vernier - Vapor Pressure of Liquids

Activity Overview

Students investigate the relationship between the vapor pressure of liquid and its temperature. They use a Pressure Sensor and a Temperature Probe to collect pressure and temperature data. Students compare the vapor pressure of two liquids.

Before the Activity

Print the attached .pdf for each student. You will find one .pdf for EasyData and one .pdf for DataMate.

During the Activity

Distribute the pages to your class.

Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Attach the Pressure Sensor to the flask and the Temperature Probe to the water bath
  • Introduce methanol into a flask
  • Measure the temperature and pressure of methanol kept in a water bath at room temperature
  • Measure the temperature and pressure of methanol kept in 4 different water baths at 0 to 15 C, 10 to 15 C, 20 to 25 C, and 30 to 35 C
  • Calculate the corrected atmospheric pressure
  • Plot a graph of vapor pressure versus temperature
  • Repeat the experiment with ethanol at room temperature
  • Compare the vapor pressure of methanol and ethanol

    After the Activity

Students will complete Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
