Vernier - Dissolved Oxygen
 


Activity Overview

Students use the Dissolved Oxygen Probe to measure the concentration of dissolved oxygen in water from streams and rivers. They correlate the availability of dissolved oxygen to temperature, pressure, and salinity.

Before the Activity

  • Connect the Dissolved Oxygen Probe into Channel 1 of the LabPro® or CBL 2™ interface
  • Use the Unit-to-Unit link cable to connect the TI Graphing Calculator to the LabPro® or CBL 2™ interface
  • Start the Datamate program on the calculator and set up the interface for the DO probe
  • Collect water samples
  • See the attached PDF file for detailed instructions for this activity
  • Print pages 5-1 to 5-7 from the attached PDF file for your class

    		During the Activity

    		Distribute the pages to your class.

    Follow the Activity procedures:
  • Prepare the Dissolved Oxygen Probe for use
  • Calibrate the probe for the zero-oxygen and the saturated calibration point using sodium sulfite calibration solution and water
  • Measure the dissolved oxygen concentration in the water sample
  • Calculate and record the 100% dissolved oxygen value and the percent saturation
  • Repeat the experiment for other samples

    		After the Activity

    		Students' will complete the Student Data Collection and Analysis Sheet.

    Review student results
  • As a class, discuss questions that appeared to be more challenging
  • Re-teach concepts as necessary
